100% Pinot Noir entirely from the Peterson Vineyard, which lies less than one quarter of a mile southeast of Rosella’s, on River Road, right in the heart of the SLH. Farming is uncertified organic. Fully destemmed and tank-fermented with native yeasts. Aged for 14 months in neutral French oak. Only 111 cases made. 14.3% alcohol. Excellently balanced, medium bodied example of classic SLH Pinot character- nice, ripe cherry fruit with some brightness to it complemented by earthier notes of rhubarb, black tea, and spice, wrapped up in sappy acidity and tannins that are definitely there at this young point but already smooth. Long finish. Very good and as always, very well priced. August West was founded by winemaker Ed Kurtzman and vineyard-owning partners Howard Graham and the late John Peterson.
(Peterson and Cortada Alta vineyards, SLH). The winery is located in San Francisco’s produce district. Ed prefers a style he likes to drink himself, making lighter, elegant and food-friendly wines from these two appellations.
