100% organic and biodynamic Gamay from 50 year old vines on stony clay soils in the lieu-dit of La Caillotiere in the village of Denicé. Sees 11 days of semi-carbonic maceration in concrete tanks, then aged in concrete; bottled unfined/unfiltered with zero added suplhur; totally zero-zero! 13% alcohol.
Not your average glou-glou wine, this is light and playful, but packs some serious punch, depth and complexity. Pours a beautiful purple color. Give it a little aerations and you'll find tons of blackberry and raspberry jam, violets, roses, lavender, licorice and mint. Light in body, with plentiful but balanced acidity and smooth tannins.
David Large's family has been making wine in Montmelas, in the southwest of Beaujolais, since 1840. He discovered biodynamic farming while working at Guigal and Chapoutier in the Rhône before returning to farm his 20 acres of estate wines. David is into music, film and comics, and there is a popular culture element to his labels, which he does himself. But while the wines are packaged in a playful way, they are pretty serious. He's become a very sought-after, culty producer for his energetic, playful and delicious wines.
