The Colline Novaresi is part of Alto Piemonte, neighboring regions such as Ghemme and Gattinara. Produced using a selection of Nebbiolo grapes from the Ronco Maso vineyard which are never harvested before the second half of September. After crushing, the grapes are left to macerate for up to 8 days to maximize the extraction of coloring substances and tannins from the skins. Vinification continues in large Slavonian oak barrels for almost a year before being completed with bottle aging for at least 6 months.
Tasting Notes
A whole lot of potpourri perfume here, spice, amaro and cedar, cherry essence and strawberry, with a dusting of white pepper. It’s medium-bodied, distinct ash/volcanic rocks character, quite succulent, firm dusty and ashen tannin, maybe even a little licorice. Finish is firm and fresh, all pulverized stone and chalky feel, with a twist of orange peel through pepper dusted strawberry. Lovely wine. Quite tense, but it will really sing with some years in bottle.
About Platinetti Guido
Andrea Fontana has been making wine for over 25 years and continues to carry on the family tradition that began with his grandfather at the start of the 20th century. The majority of his vines lie in Ronco Maso, one of the most iconic and challenging sites in the region containing vines approaching 100 years in age. This southwestern facing vineyard was originally formed by the flow of the Monte Rosa glacier and the River Sesia. The high levels of minerals and organic matter found in the soil here force the vine roots to travel down to the deepest layers of the soil in search of nutrients and minerals, giving wines their signature complexity, minerality, and character. In total, Andrea owns and farms just 5 hectares of vineyards, with Nebbiolo covering 80% of the production and the remainder a mix of Vespolina and Barbera.
