100% sustainable Riesling from this 1er cru site on multi-colored slate and quartzite, one of the highest vineyards in the Rheingau. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in a combination of three year old and neutral barrels. The Spreitzers employ a long fermentation, and extended lees aging to protect the juice from oxidation. The Spreitzer estate, founded in 1641 and one of the oldest in the Rheingau, benefits from a long tradition in winemaking as well as the recent modern innovations of brothers Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer, who have controlled the estate since 1997.
94 points, James Suckling. "This has all the spice and flint we associate with this steep site that has become a cult in recent years. Taste this concentrated, juicy and racy wine and you know why. Then comes the best part: the long and very stony and salty finish. Drink or hold."
92 points, Vinous. "The 2022 Riesling Hallgartener Hendelberg Erste Lage is from an elevated slate site with a loess and loam cover. The nose is tender and offers white peach and a touch of crushed yarrow with an edge of citrus. The palate is slender and beautifully zesty. A pleasant pith edge amplifies the freshness. The finish holds nuances of kumquat and bright, aromatic, alluring citrus. Lovely. (Bone-dry)"
