100% organically farmed Riesling. Coral Vineyard sits on a bench in the breezy cool Petaluma Gap AVA of the Sonoma Coast with sandy clay loams and paralithic rock soils. Patrick farms this vineyard himself- it’s the only planting of Riesling in the Petaluma Gap AVA. Harvested in late October at only 20° brim. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for five months on the lees, half in stainless steel and half in neutral French oak. Bone dry- 0% residual sugar. 12% alcohol. Only 88 cases made. Pours a lighter, almost translucent color and gives a light but distinctly Riesling nose of high-toned, lime, citrus blossom and chalk. Light in body, high in acidity with a long, lingering finish. Give this some air to show its best now or age it for another 5+ years to gain more weight and honeyed tones.
Owner/winemaker Patrick Callagy’s winemaking intent is to work with hands-on small family growers using Biodynamic or Organic farming, each wine reflecting the site, not winemaking interventions. These are brightly styled wines with a purity and acid-toned freshness, unadorned by over-ripeness or any oak influences. Trained as a chef at California Culinary Academy, Patrick honed his winemaking skills by working for 11 years with winemaker Eric Sussman at his highly acclaimed Radio Coteau winery. Intent Wines is committed to ecological- friendliness, both with farming and packaging. They use eco-friendly, lighter weight glass, natural sugar cane net-zero-carbon cork, labels printed by a local green certified company, and use natural wax-dipped tops. After 30 years in winemaking, partner Tim Lowell brings support and harvest help, while Patrick’s wife Kaitlyn handles the business end. The first vintage was 2017, now making 500 cases a year.
