100% Grillo, farmed organically (uncertified) on a single vineyard site in Salemi, on the western side of the island just inland from Marsala. After de-stemming and maceration for a few hours, the grapes were subject to soft-press before a gentle fining. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine was then left on its lees for about about two months before being bottled with a one-micron filtration and sulfur addition. 12.5% alcohol. 2,500 cases made.
Another great example of the Grillo grape from a terroir you don’t see often. Fresh aromas of stone fruit, tropical fruit and citrus with herbal hints lead into a light to medium bodied palate full of mango, peaches, lemon and grapefruit zest flavors along with another hit of Sicilian herbs. Dry and slightly viscous, with very fresh acidity and a long finish.
Poggio Anima is a joint venture between one of Tuscany’s rising stars, Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie in Montalcino and New Jersey-based importer Ronnie Sanders of Vine Street Imports. The idea is straightforward: to source great vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines, nor leftover juice from a winery, but long-term contracts that have signed with reputable growers. Poggio Anima, translated as ‘Hill of Soul,’ personifies the individual vineyards cultivated for each bottle. Average annual production is 18,000 cases.
