100% Grillo, grown organically and biodynamically on the Salemi estate (southwestern Sicily, near Trapani) at an altitude of about 400’ above sea level. With its marly structure, the soil is rich in organic substance and shows the typical pebbly configuration known as “Cuti”. After their careful selection, the grapes undergo reductive pressing (absence of oxygen) by means of a nitrogen-saturated pneumatic press. Vinified and aged on the lees in steel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 12.5% alcohol.
Tasting Notes
This bright white has a delicate nose offering scents of hawthorn, Mediterranean scrub and mature white stone fruit. The savory palate doles out ripe yellow apple, Bartlett pear, lemon zest and tangy saline set against crisp acidity. Light to medium bodied.
About Funaro
For centuries, the Funaro family has farmed two hillsides of olives and grapes 2 hours south of Palermo, Sicily. Three siblings oversee all aspects of farming and production on the property which is split between two holdings, one in Santa Ninfa, and the other 10 minutes away in nearby Salemi. Grillo is the dominant white grape here and Nero d’Avola the most broadly planted red variety, but there is also Insolia, Catarratto, Perricone, Syrah, and a small amount of surprisingly delicious Chardonnay. Everything is certified organic, and vinified very simply -- the resulting wines are pure, varietally correct, and extremely consistent/satisfying.
