100% organic Nebbiolo from Renzo’s 7 hectares of estate vineyards. His vineyard sits along the border between Diano d’Alba (where makes his delicious Dolcetto) and Serralunga d’Alba, Barolo territory. Vinified with traditional methods and no new oak. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in larger, neutral oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
Consider this a “baby Barolo”- it shares the same aroma and flavor palate as Barolo, but with a lighter weight and earlier drinkability. Classic Nebbiolo aromas of tar, leather, rose petal, cherry, earth and tobacco on the nose. Medium bodied, with some of Barolo’s characterstic power, and more flavors that mirror the nose. High tannins and acidity- give this some time in a decanter to open up. Top quality, old school Nebbiolo at a great price.
About Renzo Castella
Renzo Castella’s wines combine elite terroir and remarkable winemaking skill with an overtly unpretentious attitude. The wines’ complexity and depth are self evident, but there is nothing heavy handed or overwraught. The village of Diano is one of the only DOCG (Grand Cru-equivalent) growing sites for the Dolcetto Grape in all of Italy. The Castella family vineyards hug the borderline between Diano and Serralunga, Barolo (one of the most prestigious growing villages in Italy, period!). The steep hillsides and limestone-rich soils enjoying an ancient reputation for producing dark fruited, layered, and complex wines perfectly suited for the table, or extended aging in the cellar. Through organic farming practices and traditional winemaking technique passed down through generations of the same family, their wines express the soil, climate and history of Piedmont. The resulting wines are exceedingly expressive, detailed in aroma, and elegant. Vines have been grown in the family since the early 1900s. No herbicides or pesticides.
