100% sustainably farmed Torrontés Riojano, considered the best of the clones of this historically important but almost forgotten white grape. The label says “high altitude” and they’re not joking- these grapes come from a single vineyard at almost 6,000’ elevation in the Cafayate Valley. Fermented and aged simply in stainless steel, this has only 1.8g/L of residual sugar and a smokin’ 7g/L of total acidity. 13.8% alcohol.
This light, super-aromatic, crisp white wine explodes out of the glass with tons of all kinds of fruit: ripe tropical fruit (lychee, guava), tangy citrus (lemon oil, lime zest), peachy stone fruit and juicy pear. Overlaid on all of this is a beautiful floral component reminding one of honeysuckle and white flowers. There’s a tiny bit of residual sugar here, but the high acidity counteracts it and it drinks refreshingly dry. For fans of dry Alsatian Gewürztraminer. Pairs great with spicy foods.
Located at 5,600 feet above sea level, Piattelli Vineyards Cafayate is one of the highest-altitude wine regions in the world. Set in northern Argentina, its desert climate and dramatic temperature swings result in grapes with thicker skins, deep concentration, and distinctive acidity that define these high-altitude wines. Founded in 2013, the winery merges gravity-fed vinification techniques with innovative architectural design to craft expressive varietals and blends. The calcareous soils, limited natural irrigation, and high solar radiation contribute to aromatic wines such as Torrontés, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, and its signature Arlene Series blends. Piattelli follows a low-intervention winemaking philosophy: “we let the grapes speak for themselves.” Combined with its unique altitude and microclimate, this approach has earned the winery a strong reputation in Salta and across Argentina.
